Since 2000, new top level domains were approved. Prior to this,
there were only four major top level domains: .com, .net .org and
.edu as described below.

(Commercial)
This is the most common extension for domain names that companies
use. It is also used for personal web sites.

Is
most often used by Internet Service Providers (ISP's) or other
Internet related businesses.

Is
used by nonprofit organizations or groups.

| .edu |
Is
primarily used by universities, colleges and other educational
institutions.

(Academic)
is used by educational networks, same as .edu.
|
| .biz |
Is
used for business organizations.
|
| .co |
Is
used for commercial Internet web sites (same as .com).

| .info |
Has
unrestricted use, can be used by individuals or companies. It
usually indicates that the web site is informative.

| .name |
Is
used by individuals.
|
| .us |
Country
code top level domain available to registrants in the United
States.
|
| .ws |
(Web
Site) This is an all purpose, universally accepted domain.
|
Many
companies register their name under many of these domains, so that
others can not infringe on their name and possibly divert traffic
away from their web site. How many domains you register is strictly
up to you.
